Pendulumization- What is it?

Sort:
andmark

I was watching the Chess.com broardcast of the last round of Wijk Aan Zee, and at one point, the person on the camera mentioned something on the lines oof "Carlsen's just pendulumized."- (or something on those lines), and all I could do is wonder what it is. Do any of you know what it is? Any help is appreciated :) .

No clue, but my guess would be something along the lines of zugzwang.

Nytik

I've got a feeling the host has made up a word.

It appears to be based on 'pendulum', and given the back-forth motion of such a device, I'd wager that Carlsen had turned the game around. (Or something similar.)

jesterville

Yes that is correct...it is made-up...but the jist is...Carslen was looking down the barrel of a gun...and then Caruana chose the wrong line...and Carslen was no loner in trouble...but a clear draw...from the word pendulum-to swing.

Crazychessplaya

Ah, the mysteries of the English language! If you go over the game, it seems that the word may refer to Carlsen's need to switch his attention from the king side (where Caruana got a passed pawn on the h-file), to the queen side, where a passed pawn was created by Carlsen...

It sounds like the commentator was a certain G.W.Bush.

Aye, thanks for the answers everyone. I think  Crazychessplaya's answer is probably spot-on.

Nah, I didn't mishear it, because, people in the chat box started chaging their names to stuff like: Pendulum Universe, Pendumulizer etc...

The pendulum is an endgame method, for example mentioned in Dvoretzki's endgame book. (look in the index of that book for the keyword "pendulum")

In the Carlsen game, this pendulum was

Kh4 Kf4, Kh3 Kf3, Kh4 Kf4, ... with the white king threatening to get to the g-file on g5 (from h4) or on g2 (from h3), and forcing the black king to follow back and forth just like a pendulum if he wants to avoid that.

Try that on chessboard!

No it is latin

1. A body suspended from a fixed support so that it swings freely back and forth under the influence of gravity, commonly used to regulate various devices, especially clocks. Also called simple pendulum.
2. Something that swings back and forth from one course, opinion, or condition to another: the pendulum of public opinion.
[New Latin, probably from Italian pendolopendulous, pendulum, from Latin pendulushanging; see pendulous.]
Also an endcame tactic in Dvoretzki's endgame as Dpreuss said...
