  • #1
Also called the Russian Game: i'm playing black.  On my 11th move, which side should i castle on for best play and why?  (sorry, don't know how to post an actual board)  i've heard that the great champion Karpov used this defense as black.  WWKD?

    oh petroff defense lol

Yes, the man's original name was Alexander Petrov.  Most would go 0-0, but doesn't  0-0-0 look good and well protected?  i'm not qualified to answer though...what say ye, 1800+ players?

Both look playable. You could even consider keeping your king in the center (Kd7) as this is already an endgame.

There are lots of pieces on the board, so castling is advisable.

Why would you ...0-0-0, though?  There is nothing particular to be gained from it, and if anything the Kingside pawns are left more vulnerable, while White is not placed to threaten the Queenside structure.

Without any good reason in favor of ...0-0-0, the "normal" ...0-0 should be the default choice.

    Thanks all.
