Start with bots until you pass 500, players below 500 may have bad habits that you might learn, so bots are better in this range. Then learn endgame puzzles until you pass 1000. Then learn midgame until you pass 1500. Then learn opennings until you pass 2000. After 2000, play humans is better because they all have different exploitable weaknesses, while bots tend to have similar exploitable weaknesses.

I probably fall into the same category as many new players here, in that I tend to avoid playing human opponents as I don’t feel comfortable/good enough to do so. I’m currently playing bots with a view to getting to the point where, once I can comfortably beat a bot of a certain rating, I’ll switch to the next higher rated one and just try to keep working higher and higher. I understand that this isn’t an ideal way to increase my skill but wondered if I would actually be making my chess skills worse by doing it this way?
I was also wondering if there are there any groups on here where new players meet up and play each other. It would be nice to have regular friends to play against where it’s possible to get to know each other a bit. That would maybe make it better and less daunting than just playing random strangers.
