Why would anyone ever even suspect otherwise? I've been telling people this for decades. It makes ZERO SENSE that chess would make you smarter. Chess is no more an intellectual activity than carefully watching a football match.

People don't understand how you can manipulate and fix studies like this to show what you want. All of the other studies were done with a mind to "prove" that chess makes you smarter. They run the same scam with those "brain training" software farces and other "studies".

No doubt there'll be guys feeling offended at this and looking through it and coming out with some ridiculous excuse as to why it doesn't count.

Intelligence, what is it?

Is it book smarts or street smarts or both?

I use this site and I like playing chess. That said I have to agree with others who say that chess does not make the players more intelligent. It is an illusion parents and players perpetuate because either they want to feel good about their children playing chess, or to feel that they themselves aren't wasting time by playing chess respectively.

Acquiring general knowledge from many different areas of life probably makes someone "smarter". Id say if one had to pick a standard measurement for intelligence then the official IQ test is probably the best test we have right now. It focuses on general mathematics principles and language. Of course it'll be biased in favor of English speakers but it is still a pretty reliable test so far.

Chess could probably make people more patient or more analytical. But it would be a big mistake to translate that into "more intelligent"

What I found most interesting is that the OP either did not read the paper or did not understand it. The study didn't look for intelligence improving by playing chess. They studied whether or not intelligence matters in chess results. They concluded that practice time has much more to do with chess results than intelligence.

It is proven that personality traits are the most important factor in determining outcomes. Although to say something is unmistakenly so is not very scientific, in some instances. I do believe however that it encompasses every human activity. There's obviously a minimum of intelligence needed for everything.

Chess may possibly teach Some children the value of patience, planning, fair play and working toward a goal.  The way it is taught in many schools doesn't even achieve that.
