Wait, what was I testing? I just wanted to see if premoving would help me win.

In regards to OP's question.

When I was in high school I mostly played the same one or two people - my best friends. I took it pretty seriously, and ended up becoming better than them. I would win almost all of the games. It felt amazing and like I was becoming a really good chess player. But I wasn't. I was becoming better than them. That's it. But in terms of my place in the greater chess world, I was average at best.

I think if you enjoy playing your sister, by all means, you should keep playing. It all depends on what you are after. If you want to be in the top 10% or higher, it's going to take more than that. But if that's not what important to you, then don't worry about it.

tldr: keep playing her, but if you want to compete at a higher level, you'll want to also play as many other people as possible and analyze your games.

Thank you so much. What I am after?

I want to become a better player ONLY so I can see more deeply the miracles in chess. I don't give a rip about Ratings. I don't give a rip about being known or looked up to or for a title. I ONLY want to experience the joy of discovery since no two games are ever the same.

I'll keep playing my sister. If we get bored, we'll change it up and learn new openings. Or maybe we won't learn openings at all. Maybe we'll play 'fly-by-seat-of-pants chess and that is fun as well. And I'll play others because, when I play someone a game, I feel (in a way) that we are sharing something special and that makes THEM special to me. But I am no longer pushing myself so hard that I lose the magic in this game.

Not gonna happen. Nothing is worth giving up the joy this game brings to me. I appreciate your perspective!

It can definitely aid your opening knowledge in specific lines. I play my friend James regularly, and we’ve got far too much prep now in the lines we play against each other

Well I HATE seeing my rating graph show a red arrow and I also hate losing rating and having red squares next to my games

losing rating means, time to not play a game for a while for me.

my brain: JUst ONE MORE GAME PLSSSSS DRAGONROAR

Why do you even want to play 10s bullet if you keep losing

I don't. I've played a few because a few 'younguns' said, 'Oh don't knock it until ...' yeah so I played a few. And I've had a few sprung on me unexpectedly, never realizing not all my friends know I don't do fast games. :-)

Avatar of Pudding

I told my friend to stay away from bullet (his rapid is 950) and he joined a 10 second ultrabullet tournament 🤦🤦🤦

Avatar of Pudding

That was quite a while ago though

I played isolani d4 in a bullet game just now but I didn't realize it was rated and since I never play bullet and am only like 300 and he never plays bullet when he lost he lost like 300 points 😭 but its fine because its easy to get back

And *I* didn't realize it was bullet, hahah! I'd have premoved if I'd have learned how but I haven't. :-)

Avatar of GraysonKellogg

You need to turn on Premoves in the settings.
