Playing worse than before

Those 3 books you mentioned before?   Great books.  Some of the reading will be over your head as you're just getting started (not being arrogant, they were over my head too and parts still are)  So read them again and again later as you improve.  The tactics book by Polgar is really good.  After puzzles 15 they get harder and after 20 they get even harder.  You might consider just reading the first 15 of each chapter, then quickly do them again, the same day.  That'll help ingrain them in your brain.  Try to do 30 to 40 a day.  Less than that and you're not getting full benefit...More and you go into overload and don't learn as well.  Doing say, the first 12 of 3 different chapters is a good idea.  That way you're learning 3 different type of tactics.  Then remember, do them over the same day!  It should take much less time the 2nd time.  Don't fret if they don't come quickly the 2nd time though.  Do them the 2nd time before moving to a diff. chapter.

A month from now, if you do the above 2 things, you'll be much better than you were before.

Little feedback here: S. Tactic book surprised me. I didn't think it would be this practical (she only explains a tactical concept for 1 or 2 pages then lets you practice on your own). But it's surprisingly very helpful! I'm doing the 20 first exercices of each chapters (around 3 chapters a day) but i might slow it a little bit down and do as you said: 12-14/chapters, 3 chapters max and once done i'll redo them. I'm still very curious to see the rest of the book. Since the puzzle are organised by theme. So it makes it easier than in real life chess game since in the pin chapter, i'll be looking for pins. In the fork chapters for forks etc... I really enjoy it. Much more than emms's Discoring chess opening (not finished, but not a huge fan happy.png)

I might consider, once through, getting her father's massiv Puzzle book. What do you think? I know chess.com has a great tactical trainer, but i can afford it since i don't have paypal or creditcard...

Course you get 5 free tactics problems a day here.  You can just do the Polgar book over and over, like 6+ times, for now.   Till you get fast on them.  Believe it or not, they DO and WILL get ingrained in your brain.  I'm still going thru it too and when I do a quick follow up, still, they look new to me.   Yep, I usually do some tactics right before a game; to fire me up.

Holy cow!  5000+ tactics problems!  I see you can buy it for $10.94 at this time.  That freezes my brain to think about it.  I guess it made Susan and Judit Polgar both GM's by going thru it.

Think of it as the problem of "learning bad habits". In order to unlock your full potential, you need to make sure that the fundamentals are grounded, but this may mean your "rating" will recede as you unlearn the bad habits and reinforce the new ones. Overall though, you should be better off in the long run

That's funny you should say that BlackBelt, I've been in a horrible 120 point drop since I've started studying tactics.   Sounds too weird to be true, but. . .

youve also only played 50 rapid games.....so your rating probably wasn't stabilized to begin with.

Yes indeed. That's the main reason why i decided to purchase beginner's book as adviced in my other thread so (re)do my basics (weapons of chess, complete endgame course, Polgar's tactic for Champions wich i'm currently reading after weapons o.c. and last Discovering chess openings).
Another thing that i'll stop play, for quite a while, are rapid (or even worse, Blitz) games. I'll play 1day games and take my time for each reasoning. Then i'll switch to 30mn games.

I've a question for you guys (could have open a new topic just for it, but didn't want to grin.png)

How long did (does?) it take you to feel a difference in your game once you've adjust or corrected something (like i'm doing right now by currently doing daily around 20 to 30 tactics puzzles). I can sometimes see better spots on the boards but it isn't significant or current (i still miss a ton of spots)...

I'll probably sound like an impatient twat. It is and it is not the case. Since i'm just recently taking the game seriously, I've no idea what i got myself into wink.png

Maybe it was already said (I didn't read through all of the pages), but slow it down. Bullet/Blitz games are exciting, but you won't learn as much playing fast games. Slow things down, and you should improve.

I stopped playing blitz and bullet a while ago ;D I hope that every puzzle that i'm doing daily are going to have some sort of benefit in a not to far future happy.png I'm not very tactical. So it's a must. I restrain myselft to read/exercise anything else yet (I've Seirawan strategy book on the side). One thing at a time, i guess

I just finished Polgar's book and at times, I see it helping me find a tactic that wins the games for me...or see my opp. doesn't see a tactic.   We both, Fedec, must keep practicing the tactics.   Today I had a guy blown away, up by 10 or 11 pts, then missed a simple tactic, moving my N, and he came back and won the game.   Painful, but i hope I'll remember that tactic...bring the freakin Knight in to the attack!   There's burnout too i think...so when I'm not getting the tactics, I try to stop for the day.  I blew most of my tactics problems today, a harbinger of the way my games would go; probably tried too much study.   Heh, I played some German kid, 12 years old.  I tried to speak to him but probably said it wrong.  He wanted to know how I could speak German.  I said, "meine Deutch ist sehr wenig...ich lerne in schule wenn jung"     Is that close?
