Course you get 5 free tactics problems a day here. You can just do the Polgar book over and over, like 6+ times, for now. Till you get fast on them. Believe it or not, they DO and WILL get ingrained in your brain. I'm still going thru it too and when I do a quick follow up, still, they look new to me. Yep, I usually do some tactics right before a game; to fire me up.
Holy cow! 5000+ tactics problems! I see you can buy it for $10.94 at this time. That freezes my brain to think about it. I guess it made Susan and Judit Polgar both GM's by going thru it.
Those 3 books you mentioned before? Great books. Some of the reading will be over your head as you're just getting started (not being arrogant, they were over my head too and parts still are) So read them again and again later as you improve. The tactics book by Polgar is really good. After puzzles 15 they get harder and after 20 they get even harder. You might consider just reading the first 15 of each chapter, then quickly do them again, the same day. That'll help ingrain them in your brain. Try to do 30 to 40 a day. Less than that and you're not getting full benefit...More and you go into overload and don't learn as well. Doing say, the first 12 of 3 different chapters is a good idea. That way you're learning 3 different type of tactics. Then remember, do them over the same day! It should take much less time the 2nd time. Don't fret if they don't come quickly the 2nd time though. Do them the 2nd time before moving to a diff. chapter.
A month from now, if you do the above 2 things, you'll be much better than you were before.
Little feedback here: S. Tactic book surprised me. I didn't think it would be this practical (she only explains a tactical concept for 1 or 2 pages then lets you practice on your own). But it's surprisingly very helpful! I'm doing the 20 first exercices of each chapters (around 3 chapters a day) but i might slow it a little bit down and do as you said: 12-14/chapters, 3 chapters max and once done i'll redo them. I'm still very curious to see the rest of the book. Since the puzzle are organised by theme. So it makes it easier than in real life chess game since in the pin chapter, i'll be looking for pins. In the fork chapters for forks etc... I really enjoy it. Much more than emms's Discoring chess opening (not finished, but not a huge fan
)
I might consider, once through, getting her father's massiv Puzzle book. What do you think? I know chess.com has a great tactical trainer, but i can afford it since i don't have paypal or creditcard...
