Pogchamps 3 is cringe

Sort:
tactic

To be fair, PogChamps is bringing more people to chess. It's getting more people hyped and exposed to the beauty of chess, and in the end that's all that matters

Agreed

Yea, god forbid we see the community grow with people you wouldn’t normally associate with. Look, Not exactly “my scene” either, but should we really judge people we perceive to be vapid as annoying for expanding into something that is more cerebral and likely uncomfortable for them too? Imagine if Pogchamps14 includes Michelle Obama, The Rock, and some other super celebrity. Gotta start somewhere you know?

Why are you calling twitch streamers vapid? just dafran alone has more personality than the whole chess community combined. Also, people like shroud also have way more personality than any of the chess pros.

Also, chess has nothing to do with intellect.  Keep in mind that these streamers are doing chess a favor by promoting it, not the other way around.

Plus it's funny that u think dwayne johnson can possibly be in pogchamps. We can't pay him enough money to play chess even for 5 minutes let alone participate in a tournament. Idk why you mentioned michelle obama, she isn't a "celebrity"

For me it's been a mixed bag so far this year.  I really like the idea of getting 'influencers' from other walks of life to take part in an online chess tournament, raising awareness of the game and introducing it to new audiences.  I also like that chess.com take it seriously and provide GM commentary and a prize fund.  I just think it's a shame that some of the competitors can occasionally come across as toxic and obnoxious.  I can't help but think that there are other well-known streamers/celebrities/influencers out there that could take part and achieve the same aim without potentially alienating a part of the audience.

This is streamed during the day in the US but I would not have wanted to watch yesterday's matches with children in the room - something you could normally do with a chess.com stream.  Once the producers realised that one of the competitors wasn't talking through their thought process and they were just shouting a constant stream of swear words at their camera, why did they continue to go to that footage and for the GMs to act surprised every time they heard another F bomb?

I completely buy into the idea behind Pogchamps and wholeheartedly support it, but at the same time don't think I'll be watching much more.  (Saying that, I'm not the target audience as I already enjoy playing and watching chess, so it's possible that chess.com don't see that as an issue.)

Hmm... it might be more interesting, if I actually knew those people...

I've watched all the games so far, and that Rainn Wilson actor is a complete mismatch for this tournament. He should have been made to play one of the IMs or GMs from the staff so that they could assess his strength, before booking him.

hes much stronger than the girl he was playing against. shes a complete beginner

. i mean i look like some super gm against people rated 400 points below me, and  like some kind of patzer against someone rated 400 points above me. i think rainn would be rated 1100 rapid and the girl 700 at best.

KharrenxKogosupu

the cringe version of pogchamp

Here is the thing... If you don't like something... don't watch it or participate.   good god.

And yet he lost a game to a 270 rated player...

Yeah, he threw on purpose. Just another example how poisoned the elo rating ladder on this site is.

^ I agree with this post.

Omega_Doom

It is not cringe if you don't watch it. I advise everyone to follow this advice.

Have you ever considered that instead of all that that perhaps you are just a blithering idiot?

He threw on purpose, go watch the games. He would have lost the last match too but the woman ran out of time. Go watch the replay. Even Hikaru and Levy were cringing so hard and said they would have to discuss his booking with Danny.

Insulting or calling someone a liar is not going to counter any arguments. It's only going to make you look like a fool.

Edit: Look at this timestamp from the official chess.com broadcast:

If you believe the guy actually blundered and did not notice it, then you are an extremely naive.

duntcare

Chess is a fairly unpopular sport, before pogchamps chess watchers and etc people who dont even play is less than 1m, now hikaru has 1m subs and chess is big

duntcare

sure its pretty unfair and I felt that too but its the only way chess will be noticed

He didn't throw...  it's a reasonable mistake to make around that elo. He talked about his nerves and all that afterwards. You are such a cynic. Mental.
