It depends on how good at chess you want to get and also what style that you want to play...some people wil try to force you to play that style....Petrosian did that to people. He gave them zero chances for tactics and made them play his way. He suffocated them and then shredded them with tactics once he had a firm grip...

Silman says his book is best for those between 1400 to about 2000 I believe. What do you guys think of this? How much time should a person put into learning the basics of positional chess? Is it as important as endgames and tactics?
