If a black box was travelling close to the speed of light then what colour would it's shadow be?
Avatar of Gokukid

7% gray - if the light is coming from behind.

It must travel on zero gravity for a frictionless motion and constant velocity.

just turn the headlamps on first to give the lightbeam a head start

On the speed of light questions, I think Rael is basically right.  My memory from studying light physics and special relativity is that the speed of light is a physical limit.  Things break down at limits.  I think distances contract to approach zero as the speed of the observer approaches the speed of light.  So, ironically, you wouldn't need to see because you wouldn't be going anywhere because all space would contract to zero.  If this seems contradictory, note this can't actually happen because you can only approach the speed of light, you can't actually get there.

If there weren't the problem of the physical limit, turning on the lights before you get going was a pretty good idea :).  Either that or maybe drive around in circles.  Or at least drive an S pattern so the light can get ahead of you.

Fun question.

If you get pulled over for running a red light, how fast would you have to have been going in order to make the legitimate excuse, "But officer, I was driving so fast that the red light appeared green."?

the other factor to consider aristokatt, if you were driving at night at the speed of light > night means you were on the opposite side of the earth to the sun but once you have travelled half the earth's circumference in a straight line you would be back into daylight - this would take approx 20,000 / 300,000 = 0.06 of a second, then adjust your steering to keep in the daylight rich hemisphere and you wouldn't need the headlamps
