You must play a lot of OTB chess

waffllemaster

Play in FIDE events, beat IMs and GMs, and get a 2500 rating.

If you want to know about norms, it gets complicated, with rating and nationality requirements.  If you're interested in all the details look on FIDE's site.

While I think the sky is the limit for a young person like you, I think your first step in becoming a (grand) master is to become a better player. You have time. Playing OTB chess won't make you better. Studying will. (not to say that you don't need to play chess!) So study tactics, buy a beginners book. Don't read it. Study it. With a real chess set in front of you. Do all the moves. Multiple times. Do tactics training. You can do that here, or on other sites, or from books. And for now, make sure you keep the fun in chess and keep your goals realistic. You are now at 1100 rating. Aim for 1200. After that, 1300, 1400... if you reach 2000, ask how to become a candidate master. But most important, don't focus on your rating, focus on your game and make sure it stays fun. At the end of the day, chess is a game.

Dude...

You don't become a GM if you just play online! But also not everyone can become a GM like you can read in my post but if you study chess and of course play, you will get better and better! Maybe not Grandmaster but you will get better! :)

Wilbert_78

Yes and we agree on that part, but I make a difference in playing chess and studying chess. Just from playing games you will not learn anything. You have to study those games. (you didn't get that impressive rating from just playing.. you studied your games.)

And then like waffllemaster said the norms and titles start when you are starting to get really good!

Thank you, do you (or any one else) know any good chess books?

Phil_Kessel

I have time on my side to Laughing

Coach Heisman's list of "good" chess books:

Wilbert_78

Yeah, I agree with baddagno and coach Heisman. Given your rating, pick a beginners book. No shame in that. If you really study those books you'll be hitting 1400 in no-time.

Phil_Kessel

Awesome, I will check it out!

Phil_Kessel

Do any of you have any specific books that I should read?

Wilbert_78

Check Heismans list and accept his recommendations for your level :)

The yusopov serie is great for ambitious people. Very difficult, very rewarding.

Don´t feel bad if you lose many games in a row if you are playing against good players, just keep playing and learning.
