Professions or careers similar to chess

Hey everyone,

So recently I've realized how much I love playing chess, and I am also nearing the age of choosing a career path. I am looking for something with similar thinking and characteristics to playing chess (without actually being chess related). I've been thinking possibly trading or some type of analyst but any other options are welcomed. Please list anything that is somewhat similar or that is interesting.

Much thanks

Opening theory is much like science. An ongoing debate with people adding to it all the time. As a scientist you also have to constantly critically evaluate and analyse the work of others and your own ideas.

Playing chess has also been compared to being an artist, by some.

Also, 21 seems like a fairly old age to start considering career options. I assume you've already chosen some kind of direction in university.

But yeah, anything that has you analyzing stuff will meet these criteria.

Hah yeah in America 21 isn't very old for choosing a career path. I'm gonna have to get a masters in something before I can really consider  a successful occupation. Been studying business since its so flexible...i'm really just looking to see if other people have some ideas that i've missed, since its kind of an important choice lol. I like your correlation to science and opening theory, havn't thought of that.

Politician.

Shifty moves.

Sneaky plans.

Raw cunning.

Winning is all that matters; if you checkmate it doesn't matter about the moves before.

Wow, that last one kind of got my eyes to mist up...

konhidras

Swindlers...youll see alot of that in chess.

How about being a cranky old guy sitting on a park bench yelling at the world?  That seems right up most chessplayers' alleys.

Programming.

I would say economics, especially microeconomics. Logical deduction, abstract concepts, and things similar are used there to predict the decisions of a firm or individual.

Yeah, computers.  Why didn't I get into computers at that age? (oh yeah, because they didn't have them back then...dang).

a broker - they always need lots of excuses to explain their bad moves

meanwhile kasparov says "buy" ...

Brokers don't get to say "J'adoube".

Not that Kasparov needed to bother with it in order to take back a move.

"Been studying business since its so flexible"

Have you thought perhaps of working in a shop ?

Not to mention a masters degree. 'Higher Education' indeed.

@dmic006 what did you end up choosing to do for a career?
