I am a beginner and already I am noticing that from playing a lot of puzzle rush I am learning some positions instinctively.  It is weird though, like I will see the whole board at once and subconsciously recognise parts of the position and this shows me where to draw my focus, then I can look at only a little area and a few pieces and work out the tactic from there.  Of course I glance over to check bishops/rooks are where I think they are.

Is this good?  Am I learning good chess, or is this just memorizing patterns for puzzle rush like the OP says?

Pattern recognition is a big part of chess for everyone. Recognizing patterns that are found in many puzzles (and many games) will improve your chess results.

The OP isn't talking about that though. The OP means literally memorizing individual puzzles and their winning sequence. People who have played thousands of puzzle rushes (and have a good memory) will start to remember the very high rated puzzles because there aren't that many of them.

pretty bold to call the world #2 bad at chess

1. He's not the world #2 and isn't in the top 10 anymore.

2. I'm not saying he's bad at chess, I'm saying puzzle rush, and that he isn't the best at everything.

I wouldn't say he is bad at puzzle rush.

Puzzle rush is now a game where you just memorize puzzles. You spend a lot of time on learning, and then you remember all of the puzzles.

It used to be solving puzzles, now it is just memorizing them

You CANNOT memorize all the puzzles in Chess.com. They add 1-2 thousand per day. You memorize the patterns, then solve them using experience.

Maybe ten years ago he was good. Now he is washed out. Earning his living on twitch like a performing monkey.

Oh, so you challenge him. If he's so bad, you should be able to beat him, right, Smartypants?

Then explain how the record is 105

He memorizes puzzles that have similar attributes, like loose pieces, and what to do in those situations.

I don't think so. He only has 5 minutes. He just goes on learning and spends a lot of time there

Any evidence? They have total pool of puzzles for 65000 since they build  the website in 12 years ago!

So, they make <15 puzzles per day!

And I dont know whether they use 65000 puzzles in Puzzle rush or not (may be only 10,000 in PR, who knows)

At top levels, a lot of chess is memorizing the lines too.

For posers like me and most of the rest of the world, the puzzles are helpful.

Hmm... but what if puzzle rush teach you to move way too fast? Could harm more than help...
