you cant see your opponents moves but after your opponent made his move you can ask him one of those two questions:Where did you move with your piece or which piece did you move(its not enough to answer with something knight or pawn there,you have to answer with b knight ,h pawwn ,lights square bishop e.t.c).if illegal moves are done you can correct them.

But if you cant see the opponents pieces his king is both mate and not.

Actually neither the board or the pieces exist until we perceive them.

Clearly, you'd need a pre-programmed computing device of some sort to play this game comfortably - not just a chess board.
