Quick question on cheating

If you are going to play a tournament or league game against someone whom you know has an online chess profile, is it cheating to prepare by looking through their games so you know what they like to play and their weakness etc?

If it is there's not really much anyone can do about it?

No it’s not cheating, it’s preparing.  People prepare against others OTB all the time when they know or have access to their previous games, grandmasters are always doing it against each other.

As long as it starts before the commencement of a game, you could study the moves ahead. But once a game commences...you summon your own abilities.

If it's a daily match, you can still use the normally allowed daily resources.

yeah in long otb games it's pretty common that people prepare for what opening the opponent usually plays etc..

there is nothing illegal about it

Well, preparing isn’t the same thing as cheating. And, you should do it to!

No. Like you said. It's preparing. Very common practice.

Why do so many people on this site use chess cheating extensions on their browsers?

LOL -- a 9-year-old kid (my guess) beat me twice at a low-key local chess club coffee house meeting last week.  We friended here, and indeed, he's substantially higher rated than me.  I should study his games so next Saturday I take my revenge: LOL.
