I don't understand chess ratings on chess.com...any help...and which tournament is best for beginners ..I seem not to differentiate blitz, standard and bullet tournaments ..

Skinnyhorse

Bullet is extremely fast chess, like 1 minute per person per game.

Blitz is fast chess, usually 5 minutes per person per game.

I think standard is 15 minutes per game or longer.

Ratings:  1000 = beginner; 1500 = medium strength sometimes good, sometimes not; 1900 = pretty good player; 2200 = master strength player; 2500 = Grandmaster; 2850 = Magnus Carlsen is on the chess server.

Keep in mind before we get carried away

Ratings are Measures of PEFORMANCE not strength.  You might be stronger at one time control than another compared to other people.

also what is a very Strong rating changes too.  for example in "Online" chess (where you have three days to decide on a move) here at chess.com I have a 1650ish rating.  that Might seem Good but the numbers are higher for people that Commonly playing online.

I view this as a solidly intermediate.

on the other hand an 1180 blitz seems very low, but bltiz scores ARE lower.  I'm not a beginner, there either. Being above 1200 is Good in blitz, where its definitely a low number in "online".

"Ratings are Measures of PEFORMANCE not strength"

and they are relative measures, inside a given population.

For instance, let's suppose that, in average, the persons playing here are weaker than those rated in the whole world, then it would mean that chess.com elo is overrated.

thegreat_patzer

absolutely.

however in MANY places. chess players here are stronger than those say 'they' are good at chess.

here, you are competing with people around the world.   some kid who says he's good at school, may be used to just beating rank beginners.

People rated in the world are members of a club and play on a regular basis, or they wouldn't be rated by FIDE.

I think many people (like me) playing here are not members of a club and don't play OTB, and I guess they are weaker than the first ones (like me).

1600 players on here are definitely NOT experts lol.
