Resigning vs checkmate

Hi, Just wondering really, do you gain the same points if someone resigns a game rather than them allowing you to check-mate them?

Yes.

Simple answer, but that's all I needed. Thanks!

Hi,

Resigning is basically forfeting the game saying, "There is no way I can avoid checkmate and/or win this game"

The simple answer is that no matter if you win on time, win by resignation, or win by checkmate ratings will change.

There are a few exceptions to that

  1. If the game is unrated nothing happens to your ratings no matter the result
  2. If you are MUCH higher rated than your opponent (example: 2000 vs 1000) and if the 2000 wins then nothing happens--if the 1000 wins then ratings change
  3. If the game is a DRAW and you are roughly the same rating (i.e. 1945 vs 1944) and the game is a draw then nothing happens.
  4. If the game is less than 4 moves nothing happens.
