Revolting events at the Welsh Chess Federation

A few years ago I was playing in the Annual Welsh National Good Friday Chess Jamboree - I was giving Dai Young a right pasting in the final game and I had reached a most critical point with White (myself) poised to win.

It was here that Black played his infamous move, PxKing and actually removed the White King from the board!

The Tournament Arbiter was keeping a close watch on the play - he knew there was likely to be trouble and saw the grim deed.  Now although it seemed clear enough that the White King was safe and could not be captured, the wheels in chess (particularly in Macynllyth) sometimes move very slowly!  Whilst The Arbiter was deciding on the best course of action, the leader of the Black army (Dai Young) did all he could to protect his foul victory, even getting some of his big rugby mates posted around the box in which the captured King had been placed.

Finally, on the third day (everyone else had pretty much gone home by now), The Arbiter decreed that the move was not allowable.  Firstly the Rules did not (and never have) allowed the capture or removal of a King, and secondly the guilty Black Pawn was itself making an illegal move.

So, on the Sunday, The Arbiter put the King back onto the board!   “O grave, where now is your victory?!” He said.

He went on: “In The Book which will speak of these events it is said that, because of this day, all who have been in or are in White's army will also one day be brought back onto the board!  After which they will be able to play FOREVER

Needless to say the loon (The Arbiter) was thrown out of the Welsh Chess Federation sine die.  With mentalists like that running the show it really is no wonder that Welsh chess has been in the dark ages for so long.

I have a question:

How was it possible for your king to get into that position? You would have been in check if it was your move, and moving anything but the king would result in you making the illegal move, would it not?
