Hi all. I was reading this article on the USCF site (http://www.uschess.org/content/view/12106/702/) and was curious to the opinions of others on the topic of short "Grandmaster" draws. (For those of you who don't read the who thing here is a paragraph I find controversial, One leading chess journalist was ropable after the Reykjavik finish and declared that neither So nor Eljanov should be invited back to the tournament – or other top tournaments - if they held the organizers and their fans in such contempt. Appeals that Eljanov and So were really nice guys cut no ice – players had to be taught that their actions which damage chess, even though perfectly legal, can have consequences.)
My feelings are something along these lines... I feel that this draw can hurt both So's and Elijanov's chances of getting invited to strong tournaments simply because organizers prefer "fighters". However, I have a problem with the phrase "holding the fans in contempt".
First of all, I feel this is a bit harsh. I'm sure both players did not anticipate such criticism and I don't feel they deserve it. Second and most importantly, I feel like the fans are an important factor, but ultimately, it's the player's buisness if he takes a draw.
Don't invite them if you are an organizer, but I don't understand how you can condemn these players... Of course this is only my opinion :)
P.S. If the organizers didn't want a 3 move draw maybe they should have used the 30-move draw rule :)
