Horace44 - actually, you can figure it out with 9 billiard balls and two weighings.  First weigh 3 vs 3.  No matter what, you now know which 3 has the extra weight.  Either one side sinks, or they are equal and it is the remaining 3.  With the 3 that has the heavy ball, weigh one and one.  If one sinks, that is the heavy ball.  If they are equal, it is the remaining ball

if it works for 9, it works easier for 8, yes?
