Nah it's common, its the most strategic response to 1...e5. The Ruy has been one of the most popular openings in chess for decades and decades. Both Carlsen and Karjakin tend to favor 1.e4 so its only natural that it occurred frequently in the match.
Ruy Lopez

I kinda shy away from the ruy because of the endless variations... guess I should study it more.... i agree it is a very solid game and very popular with master play... kinda boring at time too

Interesting observation for someone a month into the game.
More like 50 years into the game, just recent on this site.
Not you! I meant the OP. Sorry if you thought I was talking about you

I was being serious as it looks like this is all the open with. Seems kind of boring to me after game after game of same thing. That's reason I was asking was to see if my thinking was in left field

Chess is boring. That's why we love it.
The November 2016 issue of Chess lists the top twenty openings compiled from a list of 2221 September games where both players were rated over 2400 Elo. One can not take position on this list too seriously because it is greatly influenced by how the openings are grouped. For example, all the Retis are grouped together, while English is separated into 1 ... c5, 1 ... e5, etc. Nevertheless, for what it is worth, some of the list entries report: 81 Caro Kanns, 69 Najdorf Sicilians, 64 2 Nf3 d6 sideline Sicilians, 52 Taimanov Sicilians, 49 2 Nf3 sideline Sicilians, 49 Kan Sicilians, 45 Berlin Ruy Lopezes, and 43 Closed Defense Ruy Lopezes.
I am fairly new to playing chess. Going on about a month of learning how to play now. I am kind of disappointed with the way that the world championship was played, however. It seems like all they played was the ruy Lopez opening more than anything. Is this pretty common in GM games, or does this represent chess' downfall from the use of engines
