In scid vs pc ,while making a variation move(s), i found that the move I just made was not correct and i want to cancel it so that i can make a fresh move. how can i accomplish that in scid?

In the menu, "Edit --> Undo".

(You really need to learn how to explore the menu system. Smile)

how about deleting a move that is not the last one you made? Trying "delete", "Escape" etc but nothing works. I have to remove the entire variation (and the sub variations also get deleted)

How about trying right-click, then "strip moves to end"?

The clipboard/clipbase is your friend. Copy the game to the clipbase, make your changes there (removing the variations, but they are still in the original game), then paste the changes back to your game. For really hairy edits, you can export the game as PGN, edit the PGN game in a text editor, then import the PGN game.

Doesnt work

Dunno, it works for me in Linux, both for Scid and Scid vs. PC. (I can also do what you couldn't do in your other Scid thread.) When I was using Windows, I installed Scid vs. PC in a manually created folder (not the default programs folder). Idk if this has anything to do with your problems.

This may help to cancel premove

@EscherehcsE - Demonicprowl said "Delete" but from his further description (wanting to retain variations etc.) it seems he meant "Insert" like one can sometimes do in ChessBase (although even there it only works in very limited circumstances).

@Demonicprowl - Scid doesn't have an Insert feature. For complicated cases you really need PGN in a text editor. Just use the Backspace key over the wrong move, then type the move you meant, and, as long as the following moves are all still legal (not usually the case), you can paste it back into scid.

An alternative is the Tarrasch Chess GUI. This allows you to paste really complicated PGN *as a comment*, and then has a magical "Promote comment to moves" function. Say you have a complicated game with variations and whatnot, but at move 40 you realize it was the *other* rook that went to d1 back on move 15. Here is how you would use Tarrasch Chess GUI to fix your Scid game:

  1. In Scid, Edit | Copy game to clipboard
  2. In Tarrasch Chess GUI, New Game, Edit | Paste
  3. At move 15, add a variation with the other Rd1
  4. Edit | Promote variation
  5. Copy the subvariation which includes the wrong Rd1
  6. Put the cursor in the main variation after the corrected Rd1, Edit | Paste. Since it includes the wrong Rd1, Tarrasch will paste it as a comment.
  7. In the comment, delete the wrong Rd1, then Edit | Promote comment to moves
  8. If not all the moves were promoted, keep fixing and promoting.
  9. Edit | Copy game to system clipboard (PGN)
  10. In Scid Clipbase, Edit | Paste Clipboard text as PGN game...
