No, not so much, I think. If you really need a TB answer, use an online one.

There are a few more links to online tablebases on this page (near the bottom, in the section titled "Online interfaces to endgame tablebases":

http://kirill-kryukov.com/chess/tablebases-online/

Regarding whether offline tablebases are useful - My opinion is that they probably only have minimal usefulness to the engine, but it also depends on the engine. An engine like Stockfish, which has very good endgame knowledge, probably doesn't benefit much, if at all, from tablebases. Other engines that are not as good in the endgame will benefit more from tablebases. However, although tablebases help in the late endgame, they also slow down the search due to the engine having to access the tablebase files periodically. So they probably hurt the engine a bit in the late middlegame and early endgame. So overall, I don't think tablebases help an engine very much. (They probably help more if you have solid-state hard drives.)

I do think that offline tablebases can benefit YOU significantly. They can help out if you're studying endgame theory (king and pawn endgames, Philidor's position, Lucena position, KBN vs. K, etc.).

ScidvsPC->Windows->TablebaseWindow

and click the Online Results checkbox.

having issue with board capture option in scid vs pc. Full board is not being captured only top row square is being captured.

Here is the screenshot  : How to solve this?

dzikus

@aadchesskid, you are not alone - for me 3 whole rows (6,7,8) of the board got captured. Pretty interesting that both screenshots are incomplete but include different area of the board

Does anyone know how to record annotations in different colors?  Or to set the engine's annotation to be in a different color?  I am trying to have analysis from different annotators but the same color makes it confusing.

Edit: I use SCIDvsMac but I think it will be the same as SCIDvsPC.

Can someone tell me how to use SCIDvsPC to analyze games?

You can do this by clicking on "Annotate". Basically, you open a pgn game, you open the analysis window and you click on "Annotate". A new window will pop out, with options such as "Time per move", which side you want to analyse, etc.

Ruby-Fischer

To analyze, open the game  - go  to the top of the page - tools - analysis engine 1 or 2.  Then you can choose the amount of lines you want analyzing

Thats on Scid vs Mac, but I imagine it will be the same idea.

Yes - that's a windows only bug with TkImg. I'll boot up my Win 7 box and muss around to try and find a solution.

DunnoItAll

No, no.  It's only a box if it's running linux.

dzikus

Maybe a machine with Win 7 on board could be called a box because it can be called an OS as opposed to another windows version which were graphical overlays to DOS (before XP), something in-between (XP), a virus (vista) or a mobile emulator for PC (win 8) Tongue Out

I have a HP Mini laptop.

There ist not enough place on desktop for Scidvspc, but with Scid its working perfect.

Since many years Scid has a "bug": No sound (if you are using Linux) In that case you have to install libsnake (?) then its working.

Same problem with scidvspc?

The sound works for Scid 4.5.2, even on windows. U need to download sound package available along with scid 4.5.2 and extract the files from it to bin.

Thanks you very much. Why I didnt ask 5 years earlier? Wink

When analysing a position, scidvspc sometimes gives 2 scores, for example:

-1.05/+0.32

Is the first score the actual score and the second the score after the variation? Or is it the other way around?

Also, when analysing a game there seems to be some "D"'s (in red). What does that mean?
