@fuzzbug Many many thanks! it works exactly the same on Mac:)
SCID vs PC

Is there a way to search for under promotions in Scid Vs Pc?
You can do it, although it's not a very elegant method. You can do a General search for PGN text strings of =R, =B, or =N, which would signify an underpromotion. However, you can only search for one type at a time. (That is, you can search for up to three text strings in a search, but it's an "AND" search, not an "OR" search. You can read more details in the Help file index under Searches.)

Also how do I even access the tree mask? Help files didn't help and I cant seem to find the dang thing at all

Click on the little tree button in the menu. When the tree window opens, click on the down arrow. There's the mask menu!

If you're going to go that route, woudn't it be better to search for all promotions end then just exclude the queen promotions?
Though, I guess if your database has annotations that wouldn't work

I just tried my method and if you don't have annotations, then you would need to search for all promotions with the =, copy those games to another base, such as the clipbase. Then, search for queen promotions, and after that completes use the menu option to negate that search (so instead you are searching for not queen promotions).
Not sure what to do if you have annotations , other than the explicit search for each type of promotion.

One complication that I can see is if a game has both a queen promotion and an underpromotion. I wish Scid vs. PC used the Chess Query Language. CQL handles the problem easily and simply.

Yeah, I didn't think of that.
Interesting thing I found when testing (or maybe not). Out of a DB with 540,000 games, the search turned up around 30,000 promotions, of those only a little over 800 had underpromotions.
Though I may have been hit by the multiple promotion problem you mentioned.

That's pretty sizable considering Mega Database 2016(converted to si4 because you can't search with Chessbase Reader) turned up only a little more than that number. Then again that database is highly annotated

My games are mostly the TWIC games so only date from 2012. It is possible I guess, that there are some annotations in it. I'll have to run the same test on my bigger database with older games in it.

OK, my larger DB, with 3.5 million games came up with 187,000 promotions and a little over 4,400 underpromotions.
But, now that I think about it I'm kind of wondering if the search is also looking at the headers. If it is, some of the games getting pulled in are draws so that will skew the numbers quite a bit.
The couple I spot-checked, after my process, did have underpromotions though so I'm not sure if that is getting me or not.

Hmmm - this is something i hadnt looked at before, but if you dig down in the General search, press the "Find Games with Flags", then select "Promotions" flag.
And i see the backend already has support for Under Promotions, so I just added a new feature to search for UnderPomos (in subversion).
Unfortunately, the 'found' games won't autoload to the promotion though. It's just a hard-to-change implementation issue.
Can someone explain how to use your own piece sets with Scid vs pc? Most of the sets that come with the prog look blurry and jagged when I test them. Thanks. They look OK in the preview but not on the actual board.
Update: Found where/how to add new piece sets. Downloaded some, but they all look jagged/blurry on the board!
Update 2: Scid is not accepting my board colour changes.
Hi Faarian,
I use Scid vs PC, so I don't know the exact steps for a Mac, but I bet they are similar. If not, perhaps a Mac user will respond..
Anyway, when you have your database open, go to "Search" on the menu, and look for "Material/Pattern". A window similar to this should open:
In the "Patterns" section, you can enter you search criteria, I have entered your example here, and got 43218 games in the database I searched. When it is finished searching, look at the game list to view the games.
Hope this will at least point you in the right direction.
