I feel like this is a huge waste of time to a degree, because I will never improve, much beyond were I'm at. Should a guy play just, because you enjoy it? I feel like if I can't master it, why bother?

Not sure that's how people work even if your old improvement isn't just "get better " it is a lot more than that but if you don't enjoy it you probably shouldn't do chess as a hobby

I love the game. I just don't like that I can't improve, despite studying the game.

If you love the game, carry on playing. What matters is that you enjoy it. I feel the same way sometimes, but just remember, chess isn't the end of the world. It's just a game. Saying you can't improve won't help. It might not seem like it now, but eventually your practice will pay off.

A lot pf players (probably the majority of) just do it to enjoy it.

So yes, enjoyment is a valid choice!

If you genuinely enjoy playing chess, the pleasure and satisfaction you get from the game itself can be a valid reason to continue.

Depends on 2 things.

1. Are you having fun. 2. Are you having fun?

If you are not among the best students or employee, should you quit study/ job? Life is not about being among the best although it helps.
