Should You Even Bother Listening to Non-Professional Chess Analysis?

There are LOTS of people who do chess analysis vidoes online.  However, it doesn't seem (I'm speculating) these people are often high-rated professionals.  Some are, but do not seem like it.  I'm wondering if it is even worth listening to their commentary and analysis if they are not highly rated players?

Yes.  One's ability to communicate clearly to a wide range of people is the paramount concern.  That is why Jeremy Stillwater is the top chess coach and author in the world while not even being a Grandmaster.

Two worthwhile Youtube chess analysts of whom I am sure you have heard are Jay Love, AKA "Jay Funk" AKA "Jay Funk Philly Style" . . . he has a certain young Will Smith star quality about him ... and Dr. Kerry Shirts, the renowned Biblical scholar turned chess master, AKA Backyard Professor.

BP is just a nice guy, very enthousiastic, but indeed... He's not good at chess and I am being nice now. I am not good at chess either, but that is the difference between BP and me. I am good enough to realize that. I can teach somebody to play chess, I can get them up to 1200-1400 rating but after that, they would be wise to seek a better chessplayer and teacher for their next step in the chessworld. However, BP excels with his enthousiastic approach in getting other people interested in chess. That is something most people don't have... the skill to get others interested in chess. I love the guy for that :)

To the OP, I would say that, yes, it is often worthwhile to view analysis of non-professional players, even non-masters.  On youtube I've found Majnu, Dereque Kelly, Igor Smirnov, and SuperChessGuru all to be very worthwhile.  All of these are good communicators.

I would take great exception to the Backyard Professor, though. He's slavishly devoted to Silman and his strategic principles even in the face of game-losing tactics, and his style is not to my taste.  Sometimes he is good for a laugh, but usually not for the right reasons.

Dereque Kelley is a National Master and a Life Master.

Igor Smirnov is a Grand Master.

Keep in mind that BP has played a couple rated games and last time I checked it in a topic about him, he was rated below 800. So there is little chance that anyone playing on this site would become a better player by watching his lectures. Still, he put in a lot of effort and I respect that. If we all would be so devoted to learning other people about chess, we might even get it to become populair again :)

I enjoyed the Backyard Professor's videos on religion more than his chess videos.

Did someone just call BP worthwhile? I hope it was a joke.

Ahh, the Mormon.  Father, son, and holy ghost.  How many gods is that again?  So much for Biblical scholarship.
