I am a chess progression negationist. When I read someone telling about how he increased his elo in 500 points in a year I laugh, I laugh both at him and at the people that are congratulating him. Bullshit.
Memorizing openings? doesn't work. Too many lines to memorize.
Memorizing the "main ideas" of an opening? Good luck with that.
Solving puzzles? Perhaps you get slighty better at solving puzzles, but it's not guaranteed.
Improving your "positional play"? MUHAHAHA
Go ahead. Prove me wrong. In this website we can see YOUR profile with YOUR played games and YOUR progression. Let's see how much you progressed in the last year.
P.S: avoid 200-to-500 or 500-to-1000 meaningless "progressions". I am talking about people that already knew how to move the pieces. Anyone who was 1500 or higher in 2019 is welcome to tell his successful story.
