At first I thought it was the date, but he could have wrote the letter after the war has already ended.

But of course, in 1921 the great war was not called the "first world war" yet

You can also say it was in a movie. Or maybe in a dream Laughing

Right.

You enter a cabin with no electricity in the middle of the night, surrounded by snow. You have only one match and you are in real danger of freezing to death. While the cabin is very dark, you manage to find a candle, an oil lamp, and a wood stove with some wood in it.

What should you light first?

At least one of the children is a boy, so that leaves three options:

a. The first is a boy and the second is a girl

b. The first is a girl and the second is a boy.

c. Both are boys.

Therefore the chance that both are boys is 1/3.

Yes  How about this one? A new family with two children has just moved in next door. You look out your window and see the father playing with one of the children, who is a boy. What are the chances that both of the children are boys?

The answer to this second one is 1/2, surprisingly, though it looks a lot like the first one, but it is not the same.

Kikyo_Sushi

Act,isn't "At least one of the children is a boy" the same as " one of the children is a boy " ?

In both Riddles/Cases,there r only 2 Children.

keju

Yes, same. It's just clearer that's all.

Kikyo_Sushi

If they r the same, then why r the answers different ?

( they r from the 1st and 2nd Riddles respectively )

Ist Riddle : A man has two children. At least one of them is a boy. What are the chances that both of them are boys? (The answer is not 1/2.)

2nd Riddle : A new family with two children has just moved in next door. You look out your window and see the father playing with one of the children, who is a boy. What are the chances that both of the children are boys?

Imo,they r both the same .

I think if the 1st Riddle doesn't state that "at least 1 of them is a boy" but juz asks " What are the chances that Both of a Man's 2 Children are Boys ?" ,then the answer is 1/3

but since it says that 'at least 1 of them is a boy' = 'one of them is a boy ',ie same as for 2nd Riddle ,so answer shd be 1/2

If one of them is already known to be a boy,why shd whether the other is a boy or girl,hv to do with the order of boy or girl comes first ?

Here's a mathematical one.

A trader sells a special kind of mushrooms for 50$ a pound. 99% of the mushrooms' weight comes from water.

The trader was unable to sell 10 pounds of his mushrooms, and after a week, they dehydrated and lost some of the water, so that they now consist of 98% water weight. Only then was he able to sell them (same ratio).

How much money did the trader lose on the dehydrated mushrooms?

shoopi

You need to know your math to solve that last one.

ajttja

250$? im probably wrong though

shoopi

Well in this case you can't just guess, you need to show how you reached the answer. You need to solve an equation.

BringltOn

He lost $6?
