Look at this riddle.

Mr. and Mrs. Schlobodkins conducted a party inviting four couples. The people who attended the party gave handshakes to each other. But not everyone shaked hands with all.No one shaked hands with their spouse and none shook hands with another twice.
In the end,Mr.Schlobodkins asked everyone, including Mrs.Schlobodkins, how many handshakes they gave. Each gave different answers. Then, how many hands did Mrs.Schlobodkins shake?

Mr and Mrs Schlobodkins are not a couple. Perhaps he is her son. The riddle doesn't specify that everyone shakes hands with every other candidate, just that no one shakes any hand more than once and all answers are different.  The first guest shakes ten hands, the second shakes 9 etc. Mrs Schlobodkins only shakes hands with her son. Please say this is right.

Mr.&Mrs.Schlobodkins are couples.

Your assumption is almost right. But the answer is wrong.

Then she shakes none?

Answer it with the reason.Anyway,it is wrong.

She shaked eight hands, because she shook the hands of all the guests coming.

Piecefodder

Surely any one person can shake a maximum of 8 hands as they are excluding their own spouse. There are 10 people at the party so for everyone to give a different number, it seems 2 people have to be left shaking hands with nobody. I really hope somebody gets this soon or it's going to haunt me for weeks!

Wrong answer.....

Unless one guest shakes their own hand as well, meaning they shake 9. That's the only way I can think of everyone getting a different number. But that doesn't help us to determine if that one person is Mrs Schlobodkins or not. :(

We'd better hear it then. I can't see anything wrong with Piecefodder's answer, nor how we're supposed to tell Mrs S from anyone else given the information.

I will tell it tomorrow,if I remember.

Okay, I think I may have it. The person who shakes 8 hands must be married to the person who shook 0 hands, the person who shook 7 to the person who shook 1 etc. Otherwise the spouse of the person shaking 8 hands would have to shake at least one hand and so on. Since Mr Schlobodkins is asking the question and everyone gave different answers, the only solution is that he is married to the person giving the same answer as him. Therefore he and his wife shook 4 hands each. If this is wrong I am literally going to cry. I drew diagrams and everything. I think I lost a little weight answering this riddle.

How many people actually attended the party that were invited?

10 people,including Mr.&Mrs. Schlobodkins.

Don't cry.

It is correct.

Wait... I didn't explain that very well. If the spouse of the person shaking 8 hands shook 1 hand, then their spouse could only have shaken a maximum of 7 hands. Does that make sense?

Wow, that was hard. I honestly thought it was impossible for a while. I need a little lie down now. Great riddle, thanks! Smile

Wait... I didn't explain that very well. If the spouse of the personshaking 8 hands shook 1 hand, then their spouse could only have shaken a maximum of 7 hands. Does that make sense?

The maximum no. of hands one can shake is 8 and the minimum is 0.Since all gave different answers, the no. of handshakes one by one will be 0,1,2..8.If someone shakes 8 hands, then he should shake hands with everyone, except his spouse. Thus the one who does 0 handshakes is his spouse.Similarly,if another one shakes 7 hands, the hands he did not shake will be of his spouse and the one with 0 handshakes. Thus the one with 1 handshake is his spouse,as the 1 handshake she gave will be to the one with 8 handshakes.Similarly,6's spouse is 2and 5's spouse is 3.Thus Mrs. Schlobodkins shook 4 hands.

One other possiblity is that everyone arrived at a different time.

Once a person has  finished shaking hands with everyone in the room, there is no reason for him to do shake hands again.

Yeah, that's what I was trying to say. I now have 2 pages filled with circles of interconnecting lines in my notebook. It makes quite a nice pattern if you draw it out like a clock with only 10hrs and connect them all up with a ruler. I may have too much time on my hands. :)

But presumably then they would all shake hands with both Mr and Mrs Schlobodkins.
