Sportsmanship and the Clock

I've had a question about time etiquette myself. I usually play 5-10 minute live games, and a few times in the last week my opponent has ended up a piece or two ahead of me in a clearly winning position, but has been down to about 30 seconds or so. They've got the game pretty much won, but may or may not have the time to beat me depending on how i move around defensively. Do I stretch the game out as long as I can and hope they lose on time or just concede?

Your game; your choice.

Turn off chat to avoid innane comments from your opponent.

No one is obliged to rematch despite what many members on here seem to think. No point moaning about it, just go and find another opponent.

I have just finished a 10 minute match which I lost on time but was winning overall. My opponent badgered me to hurry up and then when I lost on time and asked for a rematch he remarked "No way you are too slow".

I feel that this is not fair as when I win on time I always offer the play another game to see if they can win but I think he was happy he won and beat a better player and was scared of losing.

Yaah. What Lago said.

If you are going to play such time controls, you are going to meet lots of hyped-up jerks. Best to just ignore them and move on.

Under some circumstances where a position is much the same for both sides then winning on time is fine. Even if the player intent on winning on time is a piece down, then it's no problem.  Where I draw the line, is when a player keeps playing on in a totally hopeless position, with no prospect of winning any other way, then I think they should gracefully accept the loss and resign, or take a draw if it is offered. To keep playing on purely for a win on time in such circumstances is shameful and not in the spirit of the game. Persistant offenders should be thrown off the site, to avoid anyone else playing them unwittingly and thereby reducing their enjoyment of the game.

le_bon_fou

just play with increment

Clearly, you do not accept the  role of the clock in blitz.

Play with an increment or delay=problem solved.

It's tantamount to demanding time odds.

"Sportsmanship" is for the "Thought Control" police.

You ran out of time but your opponent didn't have enough material(a lone king) to checkmate you.
