Starting to be interested in chess as an adult and how to reach 2000 blitz?

This is the problem with people who go to the chess after watching tv shows. I bet most of them give up and never play again.

TheBlunderPunisher

That explains why there are so many people who were last online the same day they create their account

I myself is only halfway there, but I can say that it’s impossible to get from 900 to 2000 in a single bound. Play some slower chess, try some puzzles (rushes), and aim for 1200 or 1300 first. Once you get there start thinking about more advanced endgame and opening studies, tactics, and it should be pretty easy to get to 1400. Keep going from there.

Of course, this is my daily strategy, and most of my experience comes from tournaments which puts me with lower rated players, so take it with a grain of salt.

Great idea, I will set my goals lower first.

Funny how 900 is asking to reach 2000 in blitz. I have never been 900 in blitz and i know that 2000 is very hard to achieve. I am not sure if i ever reach that level. It is super hard.

If I play it for many many years I am sure I can reach it. I loved chess as a kid and teenager, but I never committed myself to it until recently.

You don't need a coach pre-2000 imo. I reached (almost) 1800 rapid in a year from being 700-800 rated. Here's my training plan which I suggest you follow. Every day:

Complete 10 puzzles

Do the chess.com daily puzzle

Do at least one 15+10 rapid rated game every day without exception

Patch up your obvious failings in a particular field, like openings or endgames or strategy, but the effort required is minimal in this case.

The key to quick success is consistency - practicing every day AT LEAST with what I said above. Good luck!!

Thanks and I do think I coach can be helpful, but not vital.

i solve tons of puzzles everyday an im still between 900-940. if i wanted to be a 2000 id have to quit my job and make chess my whole life. as a result id end up homless an divoriced. rather just be average and keep my life LOL now i think i can get to 1300 eventually. same boat as you played as a kid, picked it up again 20 years later. make a reasonable goal.

I started playing fairly regularly about 7 months ago. Also as an adult. I didn't know what castling was haha, but I had a rating of about 800 just with knowing the rules. After playing from 3-10 matches a day (sometimes more with the faster games) I can seem to keep my head above water now from 1150-1200. Strongest player I've beat was about 1600. I think if you just play games, look at them and see what you could have done better and maybe do puzzles when you don't feel much like playing you will naturally keep getting better with occasional dips from being experimental or burned out. (also in game I tend to play on instinct... and those are my worst games... try to actually think of a few moves and consider what your opponent may do before you actually move when you have the time)

Hey guys so I am an adult now, I use to play chess when I was a kid however I never committed myself to it. So recently I fell in love with this game, so how can I become an expert chess player in the future? My blitz is currently around the 900's so how can I get that to 2000? Should I invest in some private tutoring from expert players to improve because chess is my life right now. Is 900 an intermediate player or beginner?

I would suggest to invest time in standard openings. I have checked randomly two of your last games and your openings looked strange (eg 1. E2-E3 and 2. C2-C4). Try the standard stuff first before you try openings like this. Develop your pieces early so that you can castle and bring your king to safety.

I did. I've never played a classical game of chess in my life but I've reached 2000 blitz on all chess sites

You have tons of daily games though, and you have at least 30 minute per side games, so you are not only playing blitz.

Yes, i see you played too many games to be hyped by tv shows. Sorry for wrong assumption.

You want to get 2000 in blitz. It is about NM strength. You need to improve your tactic vision a lot. You need to be an expert in endgames. You need to study openings a lot. I am sure you can do it if you are willing to dedicate your life to it.

NM? I thought 2000 blitz was just more CM or expert chess player.

I don't think it takes that crazy effort to get 2000 blitz, I have seen many people work and still play chess well.

I did my highest 2286 I think and I've never studied chess or used any help, no tournament ever and I started playing chess when I was an adult so.....

I did it just playing blitz online and over the board.

I've been playing just couple of years, less then 8 years.

Oh yeah you want to know biggest secret how to raise your rating quickly?  I'm actually being serious about this :

Try playing for $ over the board of course, after couple of loses you will quickly have a motivation not to loose again and become stronger.

Just because there are many people doesn't mean getting there is easy, in fact, the "many people" are only a small percentage of the chess playerbase, meaning they are far better than average.

Take me for example: I'm 16 and started playing a year ago. I improved a lot since I've started, but after keeping track of my progress and making rating estimations over a few years it becomes clear that archieveing 2000 Elo would be a bit unrealistic.

Also, you only started playing as an adult, making it even more difficult.

Maybe weak NMs but there are some in 2000 range.

You are right. Only a very small percentage of the total player base will reach the 2000+ rating range. I am at 1744 (Rapid) at the moment and I am in the 98.2 percentile which means that only 1.8 percent of all players at chess.com have a higher rating in Rapid. And I am still about 250 points from 2000!

You are correct that getting to 2 000 is difficult and it should be viewed as a great achievement. Grand majority of chess players never come even close to it.

That being said, it is certainly not unrealistic even for an adult improver, let alone someone as young as you (I want to raise your spirits a bit). Probably even 2 000 FIDE (not chess.com ratings) is possible, but it would require a serious effort for at least a couple of years, and some talent. For various reasons (just a general lack of interest to do so, family life, work related issues etc.) most of the people will not put in that kind of effort and that is understandable as 2 000 FIDE is still an amateur level which in most cases will not pay their bills.

It is probably comparable to recreational runners who can run a sub 3:15 marathon or something like that. Most of the people will not put in that kind of effort just for a hobby, even if it is a serious and important thing for them.
