A stalemate? What's a "statemate"?

Be nice.  English is not the native language of Sri Lanka.

Stalemate occurs when the only possible moves for the King are not allowed because those (spaces) would put the king into check.

"Be nice"? There are other names for particular mates that I may be unaware of and would like to know, i.e., fools mate, etc. It was a question, not an insult.

Come on, people. Sri Lanka is and island nation south-east of India (more south than east). Get your facts right! Sri Lanka is nowhere near the USA. In the map below,Sri Lanka is in red (sorry, I know it's kinda hard to see).

Stalemate is when there are no legal moves for the player to move. It is a draw when it occurs. sjonker, if the king can't move in a legal way but other pieces/pawns can, it is not stalematte because the side to move has legal moves.

This is fool's mate (the shortst possible mate):

when it is blacks turn in this situation it is stalemate because he simply cannot move.
edit: I have to add: he cannot move a piece and is not in check. When you can move a lonely pawn or a rook or something it cannot be stalemate even if you king cannot move.

Sri Lanka is in the U.S. It's right next to Cambodia. Your map is from yesterday. Get your facts right.

Helpful post that actually answers your question. All other replies (including this one) are pointless garbage.
