For a novice like myself there's always room for improvement, one of the I ways I was told that can inprove my game was playing unrated games againsnt better players what are some things you do to better your game?

I was making my moves to quick. I now think about a move. Then typ it in the notes. (not making the move) .Then I think about what I would do if I was my opponent. Then you can see if your move is correct. Dont hurry. You have time. I am online very often but I dont hurry my games. No need to because my opponent and I agreed on 3 days per move so why should make my moves quicker than that?

fog, at the 1000 level studying tactics is really the way to move up. You need to see forks, pins, skewers, discoveries, etc. Also, take as much as you need to so that you never hang pieces. The advice to play opponents 200-400 elo stronger than yourself is good, but get rated games if possible. In unrated games your opponents will often not play as well as they would in rated games... they tend to give up too easily.

I also use the analysis board a lot and play my next move out to its logical conclusion to see if it's good or if it will go terribly wrong for me!

The analysis board is pretty useful, but I think it's making me lazy.

First learn single peice tactics like likeforest said. Skewers, forks, discovers and also double checks.

Once you start to see these you should look for combinations.  These are moves that will use multiple tactics with multiple peices, because that is how you go from stealing a peice here and there to completley destroying people with a series of forced moves. A good combination can give you an advantage where there did not appear to be one before.

Familiarize yourself with the different ways to deliver chekmate.

I also think looking at some of the famous games on here is a great way to get better.  Those games will surprise you.

What do you feel is your greatest weakness, fog?
