I have no difficulty running stockfish_8_x64 on these programs under Ubuntu 16.04 and I can run stockfish 9 in Android. The stockfish 8 and stockfish 9 set of files look very similar except the S9 executables are only 261 kb long while the S8 executables are 1.2 Mb. The Permissions etc are identical.  The engine lists in the above programs but does not run and has no engine Options listed.

I can't find any help elsewhere on the net.

That's the great thing about open source software. You can fix it.

The greater thing is that the sauce is free.  The pie is not.

The problem was solved by compiling the source code on my computer using the commands listed on the Stockfish website.
