Stuck in the 1800s

Hey everyone, I've been stuck as a solid 1800 for about two years now.  Wanting to start improving my chess again, any advice for getting out of this 1800 hole?

Are you talking about your 1825 blitz rating?

It looks like it just took a dive over this last week from a peak of 1925 you reached near the year end.

It appears this happened last week when you started playing rated games again after playing several hundred unrated games since the year end. (You have played more than 1900 unrated games out of about 4300 total.)

I also noted that you started playing a lot of 5 minute games in the same period after playing 3 minute games exclusively for months. Perhaps there should be separate ratings for 3 minute and 5 minute blitz.

At any rate, let's establish what you are talking about? Blitz? Your over the board rating?

This is the very, very wrong place to come for advice about something related to chess.

If you're stuck at a maximum rating, it's usually referred to as a "plateau". You're at your top and you can't get higher. You need to improve. This means study and practice (and not blitz).

Dr. Spudnik, how?

Notmtwain, I am talking about blitz, when I was rated in the 1900s, I stopped playing rated bc I felt I had reached a maximum, and the only place to go from there was down. Recently I decided to be more realistic so I'm playing rated again. I also believe that as I become more proficient at blitz, my overall chess skill will increase. So for the sake of this discussion, blitz is enough (it's what I've always ever played)

DrSpudnik

Blitz does not improve your chess skills. You move so fast you don't see a lot of opportunities and positional play is a time killer.

I've only ever played online blitz and bullet. Recently I started playing at a club, and a 2100 said I seemed to be a solid 1800

If your blitz or bullet rating is 2000+ , than with a VERY small amount of adjusting your playing style, you should be at least 2000+ overall(should be higher).
Play 15 minute games for a while, then switch to 30 minutes, practice writing your moves down on the 30 minute games.  Play a correspondence game, or 2 at a time.  Always write the moves down.  Get a chess scorebook.
With a Blitz of 2000, you are probably higher than 1800.
There is no 'rhythm' to a longer game, it is all cold and dead feeling in comparison.  In faster games you can 'force' your opponents around more.
Once you get used to the lack of ryhthm, and taking your time properly, you will quickly climb the ladder.  2000+ in blitz is REALLY REALLY high ha
But, it also seems you sorta have to know that.

I was stuck in the 1700s for 200 years. if it wasn't for airplanes I would have still been stuck, that's actually why airplanes are my all time favorite invention.

What is your suggested plan of study?
