One summer when I was about 1500 USCF, I went through the following books:

Rubinstein's Chess masterpieces: http://www.amazon.com/Rubinsteins-Chess-Masterpieces-Selected-Games/dp/0486206173/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1433430493&sr=8-2&keywords=Rubinstein+chess

Alekhine's My Best Games of Chess, 1908-1937 http://www.amazon.com/My-Best-Games-Chess-1908/dp/0486249417/ref=pd_sim_14_2?ie=UTF8&refRID=0Z30FZ02295ZEA9SSEVE

Capa's best games: http://www.amazon.com/Capablancas-100-Best-Games-Chess/dp/0679140441/ref=sr_1_11?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1433430579&sr=1-11&keywords=capablanca

Zurich, 1953: http://www.amazon.com/Zurich-International-Chess-Tournament-Dover/dp/0486238008/ref=pd_sim_14_1?ie=UTF8&refRID=1H24BRTBK1BE8YJKGHJZ

My 60 Memorable Games: http://www.amazon.com/My-Memorable-Games-Bobby-Fischer/dp/190638830X/ref=pd_bxgy_14_img_y

Tal's Life and Games: http://www.amazon.com/Life-Games-Mikhail-Tal/dp/1857442024/ref=pd_sim_14_2?ie=UTF8&refRID=1WTC93N1MRVJ3K1NCNAC

A book on the World Championship: http://www.amazon.com/World-Chess-Championship-Botvinnik-Kasparov/dp/1843821184/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1433430768&sr=8-1&keywords=chess+world+championship+Botvinnik+Kasparov (This is the right book, but a different copyright date.)

Nimzo's My Systemhttp://www.amazon.com/System-Chess-Classics-Aron-Nimzowitsch/dp/9197600539/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1433430828&sr=1-1&keywords=chess+my+system (again, a different edition, but the same book).

That's a LOT of work! I would focus on just one or two of the game anthologies, and supplement it with http://www.amazon.com/Secrets-Modern-Chess-Strategy-Watson/dp/1901983072/ref=la_B001IGUPN2_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1433430960&sr=1-1

And a good endgame book: dvoretsky's endgame manual http://www.amazon.com/Dvoretskys-Endgame-Manual-Mark-Dvoretsky/dp/1941270042/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1433431019&sr=1-1&keywords=dvoretsky%27s+endgame+manual

Save money, check your local library and see what books they have!

Have you gone through the site's recommended study plans Nick?                                   http://www.chess.com/article/view/study-plan-directory     After that, suck up all the U-Tube videos you can get. Read Dan Heisman's "Novice Nooks". Plus anything by Bruce Pandolfini. That should give you enough for the summer.Wink

If you are around 1500 (as mentioned in post 2), I cannot recommend any book more highly than Andrew Soltis's "The Inner Game of Chess".  Not saying don't read others, but this one's a must read!  And also, it should be pretty easy to find - they did a re-print of the book in November 2014.  It was originally written in the mid-90s.
