I thought the same thing...but he was smiling a disappointingly large amount of the time in the pix I googled.
Admittedly poor Rubinstein had ample reason not to be smiling, I suppose (btw I've always been amazed at what a big brawny sort of guy he was...I always thought he'd be some ascetic-looking little waif).
