tactics problem

Sort:
nobuo

It used to be that when I'd log in for the first time in the day, the five tactics were available.  Now, sometimes (most of the time) chess.com tells me that I've used my tactics for the day.  Later in the day the tactics are available.  Do you have to wait 24 hours to get the new five tactics?  This is inconvenient for those who don't have a computer at home.  I'll miss my tactics today if that is the case.

I recommend chesstempo.com, which I don't consider a competitor site, since they don't have chess games, and so people can use chess.com and chesstempo.com together. They have good tactics for free, unlimited.

in last 2 day when i do correct i get +1 but i lost -11 when i do wrong. is it normal?
Cherub_Enjel

Totally normal.

Been happening to me too! Normally tactics are available within 24 hours from each session for me. However, for the passed 2 days it notified me that my 5 problems for the day are up... I'm almost certain its been at least 24 hours since my last round of tactics though

CookedQueen

according to Stahl its a rolling period of 24h, means if you do tactics now then after finished you can continue tomorrow same time or later but not tomorrow earlier.

It seems in the last few days tactics have been changed, at least the amount of points earned and the time, shown as avg and now target time.

CookedQ: i just did a few tactics and raised my TT rating by 100 pts in just a few minutes. So yeah.. something's different.

Just tried to see if tactics is running after I made my post 10 min ago and its working now.

CookedQueen, I've actually noticed that at 100% solved I'm earning 11 points now whereas I used to only earn 9, I believe. Not sure if I noticed a difference in the Target Time though.

Martin_Stahl

Yeah, there have been a few changes. They rolled out a new Target Time to beta users about a month ago: https://www.chess.com/news/view/making-tactics-more-fun-and-better-for-you-1987

That has apparently been rolled out site wide. The 24 hours rolling time is newer (though I think it was that way in the past too on the old site).

As to 1 point for passed tactic, if you go over the average time by a lot and still get it right, you will get at least 1 point (though it needs to be modified to give nothing if your rating is more that 400 over the puzzle, which I don't think is the case ... inflation is crazy at the top).

@pervizkerimli, it looks like most of you +1 are from lower rated problems (which is also a new feature) and from problems where you did take a lot longer than the average to solve.

If you solve it within the target time, you get 100% now, where before, you had to solve it more quickly to get 100%.

24-hour rolling tactics was a bit of a (failed) experiment to try and address long-standing complaints from users who don't live close to the Pacific time-zone. Today we are replacing that with a system that will refresh members' daily quota of tactics at midnight, local time. Sorry for the concern & confusion!

Most paid members are probably closer to the pacific time zone. So it's a good idea to switch back and don't care about the complainers who don't bring in enough money, I'd say.

Ah, yea I see the notification by Target Time now. Well I like the update for the easier points but I'm thinking it might be a bit too much... I feel as if the older way pushed me a little more to analyze and think more quickly. But as long as I can do TT, I'll be happy haha

CookedQueen

Points shouldn't be earned easier due to a system change. If this happens all collected points (and some do this a long time) will be weighted different than before. Then yesterday the amount of X will be the same as the inflated amount of X + n-points because of the "weight" of an point has been decreased.

People not doing tactics over a time will slide down in their rating compared to other user doing the tactics.

But thats a common problem while trying to improve things and over time people will adapt.

I got some issues with the changes:

- I usually rate in the 1400-1500 range, which used to get me exercises in the 1250-1500 range. Now, I'm getting anything between 900 (too low) and 1800 (too high);

- whenever I miss a 900 exercise, I get a -11 penalty; if I miss a 1800 exercise, I get the very same penalty. Before this change, an higher exercise rating meant a lower penalty in case you missed it. Is this supposed to be like this from now on?

- apparently, the same is happening when I get exercises right: getting 100% at a 1100 exercise gives me the same points as getting 100% at a 1600. Everyone’s comfortable with this?

CookedQueen

I'm afraid a few people around here are really thin-skinned when it comes to the recent changes of the tactics. There's no need to attack people when everything is fine! Eat this and try to understand the world instead of creating user accounts for such stupidity!

Noticed that too. I've been in the 1800-2000 range for the passed 3 months or so and I had tactics within that range given to me. Now I get problems as low as 400 points beneath my level... Not too fond of this change. Wouldn't say its as conducive to ones growth when compared to the older version; I faced higher level tactics and had to think more quickly to score the most points.

Does anyone know what the rating range is for TT selecting my next puzzle? I just got one 400 points below my TT rating. There used to be a way we could select our ranges. Is it gone? We could also look at our TT history. I used it to review puzzles I had missed in the past. That gone too?

Martin_Stahl

You can't select ranges unless you are on unrated.

The new update will pull tactics from outside your current rating, in a larger range.

I've been using the new method on the beta, off and on for the past month, and I saw an increase in overall rating. It's nice to see some theoretically harder and easier tactics when practicing, in my opinion.

Thanks for clarifying, I was about to read my post again to see how could I have been so terribly misinterpreted... happy.png
