The 20% rule
Say for example you blunder a piece in a 10 minute game. 2 minutes is the amount of time you can sit idle for out of spite. Any more than that is bad manners.
You can't be excoriated for it either. As letting the clock run down for 20% of your opponents total allocated time is reasonable for most people.
The idea came to me whilst eating a sandwich. My dog was mooching around me. My dog is nearly one year old. Every day I give this dog the last few bites of my sandwich. Why? Because I don't mind parting with such a small amount. Today I did an experiment. I got down to the last few mouthfuls but instead of giving it to him. I set the plate down in front of me and averted my eyes. When I turned back around my sandwich was gone and just as I predicted - I was not mad. It is such a small amount. I think wasting 20% of your opponents time because you're mad is OK. That's the conclusion I have came to.
