Ok I'm going to have to support this man partially. I don't have a problem with most of your ads (gold member+Firefox+ABP), but god, make every effort in the world to get rid of the advertisements with sound. There are very few things on the internet that are as annoying as scrolling over an ad and your computer speakers blare: "HEELLLOOO????", especially if you are a regular of a site. I never thought something could be more disruptive then pop-ups.
The ads on this site SUCK!!
Complaining about this advertisement deserves a thread of its own. Its one of the most annoying ads on the internet, I want to know which person decided to mix "rollover" with "sound" and take a good swing at them.
Note: just an image... we're safe from that evil smiley between the words "smileys & makes" on the bottom row that can't stop yelling "HELLLO!!!!"

Cost (n) 1.What you could have if you didn't have what you have.
You have a free place to play chess online 24/7. It's costing you pop-up ads, banner ads and some extra features.
I have an ad-free place to play chess online 24/7, some bonus features and a rather nice T-shirt (I mean really, it's a nice T-shirt). It cost me a little bit of money.
You are free to choose.
Wow, there are popups? Thank god I have a good browser, I never would have spent more than two seconds on this site if there were pop-ups.
Seriously, popups kill my fun in anything, right now I'm seriously considering becoming a paying member (only reason I am not right now is that I easily get bored from stuff and 30 bucks is still a lot for a student so I want to be sure I will use this site for longer) and I never would've even considered if there were pop-ups.
There might be a lot of potential gold members chased away if they see pop-ups when first entering the site. But luckily, it's not my problem :)
I think 90% of the replies on this post missed the point. And no... I'm not a premium member nor do I plan to be. Eric runs a truly wonderful site and provides a LOT of content for free. I really appreciate all the work that Eric and staff put into this site. I have no issue with having ads on the site and I hope that they generate millions of dollars in revenue for chess.com as the site truly deserves it. The issue that I do have as well as the original poster I believe is with the ads that suddenly expand and take practically the whole screen covering up everything that you're trying to view. These ads are embedded into the page so that a pop up blocker won't stop them as there isn't an actual new window being created for the ad to be displayed in. I feel like being told to buy a membership simply to get rid of the annoying ads is not a solution at all for like I said above, I have no issue with having ads on the site. It would be even better if the ads were keyed to the content of chess.com (i.e. chess related ads). Eric, how about some filters so that at least if we're going to see ads, we see ones that might actually entice us to click.
Except that I think it's just honest to pay 30$/year for this great site, you can simply use Firefox + Adblock Plus + NoScript to get rid of all ads and popups.
Don't be so stingy just get a membership and quit complaining pal. When you waste bandwidth with this topic it only makes the situation worse.
omg your all a bunch of dum@ss retards he said he didnt want to be annoyed into doing it
Thanks tips.
One more non-paying member who doesn't have a problem with the ads.
It's a great site. You don't like it? Go somewhere else. You don't want to go somewhere else? Then quit whining and play chess.
LOL. I use FF and havn't ever seen a pop up add on chess.com. Furthermore, the easiest thing to do is to scrounge up $30 and join.
FYI - there should be NO popups, popouts, or audio ads on the site. if you see one, PLEASE use the "Report Ad" link so that we can complain to the ad network and have that ad removed. i personally don't like those kinds of ads when i use other sites, so i don't want them on my site :)
we do want people to subscribe, but we don't want to make them angry with irritating ads :)
There should be more ads. I like ads.
