This will be a forum where I post segmants to help players rated 1000-1700 improve their game. If a player wants they can post questions and games for me to answer and analyze. I will try to keep  this forum going for as long as I can.

DMGame

Once a week I will post a segmant.

DMGame

Today I will briefly touch on piece play. What is piece play? To put it very simply piece play is how active your pieces are compared to your oppoenents. There are many positional concepts that affect piece play. I will adress thoughs topics later. Before I continue I will show some of the topics I will cover.

1. Thought process

2. Tactics

3. Imbalances

4. endgames

5. openings

I will explain all of the above slowly but surely to build up a fair amount of info. Okay! Back to todays(more like this weeks) lesson.

How do you maximize your pieces? Simple! Look at the below example.

as two more examples of planning for your pieces heres a snipet from the queens gambit and the sicilian.

That is all for now! Next week and for a little to come we will continue to examine piece play. By next year you should have a good understanding of how to use your pieces. all thats left is to put that into use. until then!

Great, I wouldn't consider myself as a beginner nor a player below 1700 but I may as well be a patzer.

I recently went to an OTB tournament in the amateur section (im unrated) and won it convincingly with 5/5 (perhaps I should have entered to the advanced section as other chess coleagues but it was one of my first tournaments so...)

I had a relatively easy time winning the games but on round 3 an old guy gave me a battle in the opening, in fact I think my openings are the weakest part of my play.

I did some analysis on it but perhaps you may be able to highlight other weaknesses tips, or I dont know what, you are the stronger player here, im just your student lol.

NimzoPatzer

PD: I know I missed some nice mates twice like on move 35 or 36, I was low on time, perhaps I still need to work on my tactics.

DMGame

Good job! 5/5 no matter how easy it was is always a great accoplishment! I will look over that game as soon as I can. I hope you have a great day!

DMGame

Really many players could use this advice. So if you need some help just leave a comment here. If there is a topic you want me to touch on just say and I will try to write an segmant about it.

DMGame

On 6. Bc4 b5 and Qc7 give black a nice position. also b4 winning the e4 pawn is a threat. move 9. 0-0 is definently best. Nc6 is okay but a move like b5 can be played. I am not a huge fan of 13. b4. I like Bb7 and after f3 is played by white then b4. Bb7 is prep for queenside attack. But 13. b4 does make sense. So far I believe you need to work on 2 things in particular. 1. Opening knowledge. Not theory but knowing the plans behind each structure. 2. thought process. These things would boost your chess greatly. The last move of the game are inacurrate from both sides. Hwever your endgame play was good enough. I think you main weakness is structure knowledge then thought process, endgames, and finally tactics. These are the areas in yur play that need the most work.

how to get rid of inaccuracies

Getting rid of inaccuracies is not simple. No one can get rid of inaccuracies. You can minimize the amout you make with a good thought process, but that sas best as you can do. We will be talking about some thought process.

DMGame

well sadly I can't continue this.

DMGame

Whenever I get a chance I will try to do a little.

DMGame

I have created a series that will act in place of this forum. You can still post here but i will not be active here.

Hi DMGame, thank you so much for all the wonderful advice. However, there are 2 things that I'm not sure of- The opening and endgame. In the opening, where is a good site/video that I can learn about the theory behind it (e.g. Lock up the kingside, keep the knights connected with one of it on c5 and attack the queenside). Also, I've read that the endgame requires a lot of calculation, but I don't know how to start. Sure, I know basic checkmates (Queen, Rook, 2 bishop, bishop+knight) or the idea about king activity. But when faced in actual game where there are many factors such as pawn structures, rook against 2 pieces, I'm completely lost.

For the endgame you need to know the patterns and Ideas. Calculation will help. For the openings knowing the plans for each structure will help more then the theory.
