The Benefits of Playing Chess!

I think you should paragraph all of that.
But it is good for children who seek out a logical and rational mind.

Jeez, what a crock (another one of these "aren't we all geniuses?" things)...
I don't know if chess has all those benefits or not, but I didn't see any post on here implying they thought all chess player were geniuses.

As far as helping concentration goes, learning this certainly hasn't helped me yet. I just tried to castle by moving my rook first.

I wish chess taught me one of the most important lessons of all.... how to stop playing chess!!!!
Seriously?

Yes, many people play more chess than they would like to.
Well, at least you appear to be good at it.

Unless you are high enough to make a career of chess, I don't think there are substantial external benefits. Well, it is probably a cheaper passtime than some others, that's about it. But basically you play it for its own sake, not for "benefits."

I think that it's a hobby like any other -- you don't really need to justify your hobbies do you? I do it because it's fun!

You mean there's not even retirement benefits?!
Unfortunately, chess didn't discipline me to tackle your mighty wall of text.
For my 2 cents, after a rating of 1200 or so (maybe earlier), there's not much chess can teach you except how to play better chess.
It teaches you how to be humble when you realize the gap between you and better players. Also it can teach diligence and discipline to keep practicing after you get defeated by said players. If you really monitor yourself it can teach you about how you learn things. Like for me, I never realized how much I hated revisiting problems I did wrong (in chess, examining a loss). I still hate it but now I know that I can learn things much faster if I force myself to do that.
tl;dr I think chess can teach you a lot about yourself.
