I think chess.com is the best website, here are some reasons that make chess.com stand out from the other chess websites.
1. They make you pay to use the site.
2. They limit how many games you play a day.
3. They make it so the only thing you can do is play chess no chat, no tournaments, no clubs, and you don't even get to change the board you play on!
Now, I don't know who started chess.com but I think he was right on track on how to make this fun and easy to do and play.
