Five Greatest Chessgames in History
So as a topic for discussion I offer my selections for the 5 greatest games in chess history, listed in reverse chronological order.
1) Kramnik- Leko Brissago WC match Game 8
2) Kasparov- Topalov 1999 Wijk an See
3) Bovinnik Tal 6th Match Game WC, 1960
4) Lasker Schlecter 10th Match Game WC Berlin 1910
5) Bird Morphy London 1858
How is the greatness of a chess game determined. Well, I would argue three main factors - how great was the play in the game, (was there amazing creativity and calculation), how momentous was the occasion, (was the course of chess history changed in a way that would be discussed 100 years later), and 3 the greatness of the players.
Yes of course there are no “correct” answers here, merely a “barroom conversation”. But I am happy to defend any of these candidates with why they qualify, and discuss other candidate games..
