I think it's quite important. Without being able to calculate accurately, you cannot mate your opponent, or defend against a badly coordinated attack

To ask a bit of a generic question, out of all the various skills required to succeed at chess, how important is calculation and analysis of concrete variations for beginners and or intermediate players that wish to improve? Based on analysis of my own habits, I think it may be the most important thing I need to work on.
