As late as the mid-to-late 19th century, the practice of White moving first had not yet become standard: it was either white or black that could start the game!

Interesting.  The Wikipedia article on the Immortal Game (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Immortal_Game) also cites the Kling and Horwitz, The Chess Player, as showing Black moved first, though it says it's a July, 1851 publication and provides a link (note 2) to the free ebook of The Chess Player at Google. Anderson moved first but modern game descriptions have given Anderson White to conform to the White-moves-first requirement now.
