The 'Pointlessness' of Chess

Sort:
Theempiremaker

I'm much further in understanding of life than you can imagine ''pointlessness'', one major reason is recognizing a significance of all things related to life.

Pointlessness

Theempiremaker, but with this recognizing of the significances of all things related to life, do you take advantage? Obviously not if you cannot see the simple incontestable point of life. The existance of life needs a point and the point is the thing that needs to be understood.

boots9548, if I were to enjoy as many things as possible in the rest of the time I had left on earth I would eventually die and know nothing about anything, all I would have to say for myself is that I enjoyed as much as I could for myself. What about those who cannot enjoy life? What about those who dont have the means of enjoying things you may enjoy? Shouldn't everyone help everyone? If not then why not? If not then there must be a point in life, undoubtedly the inconstestable point which I speak of. If one believes in something so strongly, perhaps even yourself with your "enjoyment of everything possible in life" then maybe, just maybe one can believe in an afterlife, which then opens the door for them to be accepted. Take enjoyment of the fact that you do believe in afterlife if you do, and take enjoyment that you know you have control over whether or not you will be accepted. And in that lies the true meaning to life and all of the other meanings of life such as enjoyment, chess, and everything else that finds it's way in.

Pointlessness

Is this attention that I want? No, although that is what I am pulling towards me, it is not what I am ultimately striving for, I'm striving for understanding of the people of the world, it is hard to have your word spread across the world today, unless it is in something entertaining to humans, or of some importance to the majority of earth. You seem quite frustrated Chessbee, obviously my words were enough to drive you to express your thoughts of me for everyone to read. I am glad I humored you, but that is not what I intended, I would truly like to know what you beliefs on the matter are. So, if my thoughts are so ignorant and stupid, please enlighten me as to tell me in what way they are, by extending your wisdom to me, the stupid one as you say. But as I can see, you are not wanting to take part in this discussion. So please, until you are wanting to help anyone or anything at all, other than pleasing yourself by ranting on about how pathetic I am. Do not post - I would ask.

I really don't see the point in this discussion...

hahaha

sorry, I had to say that...

-MICKEY-

Chess is only pointless in your opinion.

Pointless.

If being religious and trying to make us all equally religious is the point of this guy's life--fine.  It isn't the point of mine.  Everyone decides what the point of their life is, assuming they feel the need to attach a point to it.  The point of mine is maximizing my enjoyment without harming others unnecessarily.  Chess fits into that meaning for me.  Got nothing more to say except "Pass me another beer, please."

starwraith

what a troll you are, pointless.  what exactly are you doing to "better humanity" (in your own words)... posting rubbish to get a rise out of people?  sounds productive to me

Whether I win or loose, I derive a multitude of parables from the various aspects of chess.  In the struggle between good and evil (which is not based on appearance only, as light and dark are both alike unto God), between the powers and the false ones, in the light of the four corners of the earth, or in the dark.  Think about how some see afar off, and others do not, as each is moved by its master.  The symbolism is pure enrichment, especially in certain phases of the match, and the final result, as could be reflected in various situations that we all face.  I personally relate most with the rook, as at the high point of the city, the watchmen could see in the distance, and blow the trumpet to alarm or inform.

I agree that there is a higher calling in life than playing chess, and there's a time to forske all things in assuring that you have the main thing:  knowledge of the Holy Scriptures.

we all have our own definition of what is or is not. It's a stalemate guys.

Clearly, pointlessness, you offer only contradictions. You say that chess is pointless. Why? To stop people from playing chess. Yet you admit to playing chess yourself. You say that survival is not important, but that there is a point in living. You cleaim that the point in life is to find the point in life - such a circular definition that if it was indeed fulfilled, it would defeat itself. You baldfacedly lie in saying that you do not want attention in the posting of this thread. You ask others to not post if they do not want to help others, yet you yourself post only attacks upon others and their ideas. Even so, I am posting to help others; I am posting to help you. For your beliefs have some semblances of actual merit and pointfulness within them, but you mar any of this by your fruitless ranting. And so realise that just because the main point in life may be one thing does not mean that other things are bad, unworthy, unnecessary, or pointless. A far more developed and mature argument would be that such things should not be seen as high priorities, and must be seen in their proper places, and here I really do not think that really anyone would argue with you. I seriously doubt that more than a handful of people in history have thought that chess was the be-all and end-all of life - not even Fischer as referenced above. So do us all (especially yourself) a favour and think - you were given your brain for a reason, so think, and do not merely make wild accusations for others' interest in yourself, for in stead of helping them, you hurt them.

Having read several, but albeit not all, of Pointlessness' responses, is anyone else reminded of Dostoyevsky?  I'm thinking particularly Notes from Underground.

Chess does nothing to better humanity. Not that it should, not that it could, but it is not doing anything productive in any way at all. Time is limited on earth, anyone can go at any time. So chess can be for fun I suppose, but really it is pointless.

Even more pointless is pointing out things one believes to be pointless.  Replying to it may be even more pointless.

I think I'll go listen to nihilistic emo music now and cut on myself.

Saying that Chess is pointless assumes that life has a point.

Life does have a point. The point is to learn from the people that are currently alive. Build on what you learn and pass it on. Make life better for the comming generations. Do you enjoy playing chess via internet with people all around the world? among other things, all this was possible thru the "point of life" :)

EnoneBlue

uh well I was trying not to pull this into a religious topic (for obvious reasons), but the point of life is to worship God. any point you make for yourself is useless, pointless, etc... (by worship I dont mean praying all the time, it's just doing things God would like. chess can be one of them because you increase your intellect, and God incourages seeking knowledge)

joetheplumber

yes, it is, but so is everything else. Even the most brilliant people alive cant tell you what the point to life is.

Wow! This is the craziest coincidence! Pointless was my word of the day today!!!!! What are the odds of that?
