My opponent in the beginning maneuvered his queen to a5. Then effectively took rook, bishop and queen before I could stop the bleeding. How should I have defended an aggressive queen hovering on a5.

First of all do this:

Secondly, each time after your opponent's moves, figure out what their threat is, and then don't let them do that.
