It seems to defy basic opening principles, why is bring your queen out so early justified? what is the purpose that makes this playable? I would like a few variations as well!

I thought Qe6 or Qh4 were the main lines. it's seems like you just trade pawns, retreat the queen and then white still has the tempo, what is gained?

The Centre-Counter/Scandinavian is one opening I like a lot, although I don't play it often.

You're right in that it allows white to attack black's queen in the 2...Qxd5 variation, but this is only for one turn, if black plays 3...Qa5. It does "break" that principle, letting white develop with tempo, so it's not totally principled, but that doesn't mean it's not a totally playable opening.

Furthermore, black often plays 2...Nf6, which means that black will be able to recapture with the knight and put it on a decent square.

I would say that Chin of Quinn gave decent variations - that's typically how you want to play the CC.

That's why, if asked, most people would say that 1...e5 is "better", but remember that this is only the very very start of the game.

White's exd breaks principals, allowing black to temporarily be ahead in development. Nc3, developing with an attack on the queen, merely makes it equal again. I'm repeatedly astounded by how many commentators fail to mention this. Even GMs.

^I actually didn't notice that exd5 gives black a turn in development.

But anyway, I think those moves I posted are the most popular. I always deviate as both white and black in the Scandinavian, but what I gave may be a good intro.

In particular I often go for that icelandic gambit godspawn posted about, and as white I play 3.Nf3
