You're talking about the scientists. I meant, what should the lay person do.

Umm...read the research?

"You still havn't given any reason as to why your previous argument "seems pretty good as is"."

For the same reasons as those in the argument I gave. That's precisely why I would say "Seems pretty good as is." :)

That doesn't mean the reasons are good; but you shouldn't have had trouble locating my good/bad reasons based on what the phrase "seems pretty good as is" applies to/refers to.

Ok, so the lay person reads the research. Either they are as smart as the scientists to know which of the two opinions is better, or the person they pick is just arbitrary.

Again, I'm not necessarily talking about the climate change issue, just issues in general when people quote an article that agrees with them.

A couple responses come to mind:

1. God must be a real ugly SOB.

2. Considering what people have become, I'm not sure he is still making this claim.

I don't always respond to climate change, but when I do, I offer a citation.

The layperson is rarely as knowledgeable about the subject as the scientist that has studied (insert discipline) for years.

Most that use the gray matter will read the research and form their opinion based on all they have read. I've found some of the brightest people are willing to read books or articles when the premise is not one the reader agrees with, but, why not listen to another's opinion? Especially if there are facts to back up assertions.

(yes, I get into many heated political debates)

Arguing against climate change as happening is like giving an answer to a pregnant women when she asks you, "Does this dress make me look fat?" No matter what answer you give, it is wrong.

Is climate change happening, and are humans driving it?

You might as well ask if yellow is yellow.

I agree with the sentiment :) To play devil's advocate though, if you're not a scientist yourself, how do you know the opinion you form isn't just BS? How can you judge which experts are right if you have such a lack of expertise?

Yes, that's a cool thing to do.
