What are sound and unsound openings?
agentdave

I don't play unsound openings, I play sound openings unsoundly.

sounds= principly and objectively good, usual, well known etc...
unsounds= just weird, less known

sound openings are usually considered as openings which are super solid, good, and respectable which have gained a good representation in the chess community like the ruy lopez which is one of the best and most infamous openings along with sicillian, KID, and more to come while unsound openings are usually openings that are more for tricks and are just not rlly respectable with some being like the sodium attack, fools mate, or bongcloud

I would say half because even at about 1200 I still don’t remember like any openings other than Italian as black or like 3 moves of the accelerated London for white and half because it will throw opponents out of any possible prep. “If I don’t know the opening then neither will you” pretty much

here is a puzzle. white to move. there is a pattern

darkunorthodox88

when i was a kid, and only knew how to move the pieces and played in the school chess club without knowing how wide the chess world was, i bought a chessmaster CD which included so much, opening theory, historic games, different AI personalities, etc.

One of the chessmaster personalities was called turk and was rated 2634, and only played really weird stuff. Not only did i get my butt kicked dozens of times trying to punish its moves , but i saw it play other AI's and every once in a while even beat the chessmaster AI in max strength with its openings.

That's roughly the time i decided to improve considerably, and i adopted a lot of the turk's opening repertoire as my  own. Suffice to say, winning scholastic events was easy from then on. I always got fresh unbalanced position that were still fairly sound. (with white, i at worst equalized quicker, with black i will just take slightly longer to equalize, at the lower levels this wasnt even an issue as no one played critical lines).

Here i am as an NM and i still play my creepy crawlies. I can assure you, if you pick the right offbeat openings and really do your research, you can play this stuff vs even GM's and come out fine.
